In the beginning, a leafy and dense forest stretched as far as the eye can see. However, it started to become hotter, and the green land gave way to a golden sea, a large savanna with tall grass. The last trees still standing were withering and dying, their leaves, turned red by the scorching sun, were falling down prematurely, and their dry branches were crumbling like dust. This sudden global warming troubled the community. Eya still remembered the freshness of the waterlogged earth and the softness of the thin green grass under her fingers. But now, nobody dared to go down and to tread upon the ground again. The most reckless of them had left the land some time ago, they had been swallowed by the golden sea and no one had seen them since.

Nevertheless, the Old Wise perched on the sacred tree had warned them: “Death is at the bottom, life is at the top. Death will lay low anyone who puts down roots on the ground. However the one who rises towards the sky, he will survive. Safety lies in the elevation.”  The prophecy had frightened the community, and especially Hôm, Eya’s partner. His sleep was haunted by nightmares filled with fierce creatures crouched among the tall grass and waiting for his fall. He tried to flee but the dry stems scratched and asphyxiated him. He called Eya for help but she didn’t answer, and all was dark, so dark.

They hadn’t heard from the others since the prediction of the Old Wise. In fact, each family had dispersed and had found refuge on the upper branches of the rare trees, and the golden sea prevented them from communicating. Henceforth Eya and Hôm were on their own. Their tree was no longer a shelter; their provisions hidden in the trunk ran out and the leaves tasted like ash. Furthermore, the heat was unbearable. The sun was burning Eya’s skin, and her silky fur had begun rough. She felt weak and desperate, trapped in this wooden jail.

But one day the last leaf fell. Eya pressed her head against the bark and she heard the tree taking its last breath. Consequently, she knew that they were condemned to die. Nonetheless she didn’t want to wait for the Black Wizard to come and to take them to the Hereafter. She was still young and strong. Maybe there was something beyond the golden sea, another forest, another community. She roused Hôm from his torpor due to the sweltering heat and she announced her decision to him. He scratched his head, indecisive, and he replied that death reigned at the bottom, in accordance with the prophecy of the Old Wise. Moreover, there were some ferocious beasts… and darkness…

However Eya had already jumped. She heard Hôm screaming as she was being plunged into darkness. The dry stems hindered her and cut her skin, she vainly tried to repel it. She was suffocating when something pulled her back. Thinking of a wild animal, she struggled to escape, but Hôm grumbled her name. He had leapt when he had lost sight of her, and he had cleared an area flattening the grass. Eya caught her breath. She looked at Hôm, his deep black eyes, and suddenly she had a revelation. Safety lies in the elevation. Death is at the bottom, life is at the top. They had to go towards the light, towards the top. She took an impetus and she rose to her lower limbs. The position was uncomfortable, but thanks to a hip swing she succeeded in going a step. The first one. And there was light.
